Jess Smit is an inspiring educator and project officer deeply rooted in Townsville, where she has spent the last 18 years transforming young lives. With a strong foundation in teaching, Jess has passionately devoted herself to the ATSIMS program, working with First Nations high school students to explore marine science and foster new experiences on the reef. Her journey comes full circle on Palm Island, where she began her career, now collaborating with the Orpheus Island Station Crew, the Minga Minga Ranger Group, and the Mumba Traditional Owners. Jess is driven by a profound sense of purpose in empowering others, especially women in marine environments, celebrating shared stories and traditions while building capacities within her community.
