Supporting Frontline Responses to Homelessness in Queensland
Orange Sky shares insights from creating homelessness education for frontline responders in Queensland, supporting respectful interactions.
Stories Supporting Frontline Responses to Homelessness in Queensland Creating space for understanding Homelessness in Queensland is complex. It looks different from person to person, place to place, and day to day. It’s shaped by rising housing costs, domestic and family violence, mental health challenges, trauma, and economic instability, often all at once. At Orange Sky, we see this complexity every time we pull out our orange chairs. In the space of an hour-long wash, people share stories that don’t fit into neat categories. What’s consistent is how powerful everyday interactions can be – especially when someone is navigating a tough chapter of their life. That’s why we recently created a homelessness education resource for the Queensland Police Service (QPS), designed to support officers and frontline responders in understanding homelessness more deeply, and in approaching interactions with empathy, professionalism and cultural awareness. The impact of everyday interactions: building trust in Queensland’s support systems Often, police officers are among the first people someone experiencing homelessness might encounter in moments of stress, crisis or uncertainty. These interactions might be brief, but they matter. The way a person is spoken to, listened to, or acknowledged can shape how safe they feel in that moment, and importantly, how willing they are to engage with support in the future. While homelessness is not a single issue with a single solution, we know that respectful, human conversations can make a meaningful difference in how vulnerable people experience systems and services around them. The resource Orange Sky developed for Queensland Police Service recognises this reality. It’s grounded in the idea that understanding context — not making assumptions — is key. People experiencing homelessness are not defined by one moment or one interaction. Each person brings their own history, strengths and challenges. Sharing what we’ve learned For more than a decade , Orange Sky has created spaces where conversation comes first. Sitting side by side while a washing machine spins has taught us that connection builds trust, and trust opens the door to understanding. The video resource shared with Queensland Police draws on these insights. It explores the broader drivers of homelessness in Queensland, the diversity of experiences within it, and the importance of approaching each interaction without judgement. Rather than focusing on procedures or outcomes, it centres on people and how frontline responses can influence how someone vulnerable feels in a moment that may already be overwhelming. Importantly, the resource avoids simple answers. Homelessness is not something any one organisation or role can solve alone. But when people across the community are equipped with shared understanding, it helps create safer, more respectful experiences for everyone. Our shared responsibility to connect At Orange Sky, we believe connection sits at the heart of community wellbeing. Whether it’s a volunteer offering a cup of tea, a conversation on six orange chairs, or a frontline responder taking a moment to listen, these interactions shape how people experience care, safety and belonging. Through creating this homelessness education resource for QPS, we hope to build greater understanding and support a system that recognises homelessness as complex and acknowledges the vulnerability of people experiencing it. Because sometimes, it’s not just about what happens next. It’s about how someone feels in that moment, knowing they were seen, heard and treated like they mattered. "[Orange Sky] services have been absolutely invaluable... It just turns an ordinary day into something a little bit special.
