Doomadgee Camp — Taking It Remote
BG Fit's Doomadgee bush camp brought fitness and cultural activities to one of Queensland's most remote Indigenous communities.
Doomadgee was different. It's remote — really remote. When we drove in, some of the boys from Mount Isa couldn't believe how far it was. But that's where our mob are, and that's where we need to be.
The community welcomed us with open arms. The Elders were so happy to see someone bringing activities for the young people. They said no one comes out here. No one runs programs. The kids just have nothing.
We set up at the oval and within an hour we had 30 kids there. Word spread fast. They were hungry for it — hungry for someone to show up and do something with them.
The camp ran for two days. We did fitness sessions in the morning, cultural activities in the afternoon with local Elders, and sports in the evening when it cooled down. The kids loved it. Some of them followed us everywhere we went.
What hit me hardest was when one of the local women said to me: 'Please come back. These kids need this.' That's why we do what we do. It's not about us. It's about showing up in communities that have been forgotten.
We're planning to go back quarterly. The Sport and Rec grant will help us cover the travel costs. Doomadgee is 500km from Mount Isa — it's not cheap to get there, but it's where we're needed most.
