Building a Healing Path: Uncle Dale's Vision for Youth Justice Reform
How one Traditional Owner is transforming youth justice through cultural healing centers
In partnership with the Commonwealth government, Uncle Dale is spearheading an innovative two-year justice reinvestment model that places cultural healing at its core. His flagship initiative centers on developing an on-Country healing facility that will serve multiple purposes - from youth rehabilitation to employment training and education. The center represents a significant shift from conventional justice approaches, integrating traditional practices with practical pathways for young people exiting the justice system. 'We need to have like a halfway place for our young people that are getting out of the institutions of the justice system,' Uncle Dale explains. The program specifically addresses intergenerational trauma through cultural reconnection, while building professional capacity within the community. A key component involves training Indigenous staff to ensure long-term sustainability and true self-determination. The initiative goes beyond typical rehabilitation programs by addressing systemic issues through legal reform recommendations and establishing new models for government partnerships. Through school holiday programs and youth engagement, the center works preventatively to build cultural pride and self-worth among young people before they encounter the justice system.
