Tasmania Ashley Youth Detention Centre Closure 2024
What happened
For decades, young people detained at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Tasmania endured widespread physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as neglect, within the institution. These systemic failures and allegations of serious harm came to light through a Commission of Inquiry, which documented a long history of mistreatment experienced by detainees.
What the court decided
Tasmania closed Ashley Youth Detention Centre following Commission of Inquiry findings of decades of physical and sexual abuse. Replaced with smaller, therapeutic community-based units. First Australian jurisdiction to completely close a traditional youth prison model.
